Our History

The McPherson business began in 1980 and was founded by Dave McPherson. As the sole proprietor, Dave had been a captive agent with Liberty National and Prudential. He saw the flaws in being dependent on only one company and opened Dave McPherson and Associates in 1980.

Steve McPherson joined the agency in 1985 to provide additional support in agency development. In 1995, Dave and Art McPherson joined forces to form The McPherson Group to provide financial services to the agency.

In December 2010, The McPherson Group changed to McPherson Financial Group, LLC to accommodate a full service financial services company.

Many times Art, Dave, Steve, and Marvin have helped their clients navigate what Art calls “the curve balls of life.” We have seen clients, or clients’ family members, have to face foreclosures during the housing crises, bankruptcies, lawsuits, tax liens, and divorce just to name a few. Art personally has had several curve balls he has had to navigate personally, divorce, a tax lien, and even personal bankruptcy.

As a result, Art knows how proper planning can help you avoid the devastating impacts the curve balls of life may throw at you. Even though Art has had to endure some of these curve balls unexpectedly, none of those issues ever affected the business due to proper planning.

Through the help of our team of estate planners, CPAs, and tax attorneys, we can help you navigate your own personal curve balls that life may throw at you. Many times, Art will share his personal experiences with clients when they’re experiencing tough times, so ask Art to share his experiences with you when you see him.


We have a board with 15 of our clients that meet once a quarter to help make McPherson Financial Group better. They give feedback and advice on our business model and how we can make it better.   • Arthur McPherson

    Arthur McPherson


    Arthur R. McPherson II, LUTCF, has been a part of The McPherson Group since its founding in 1995. He is the current president of McPherson Financial Group and has been in the financial services profession since 1993. He received his LUTCF designation from The American College and the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors in 2002. Arthur’s professional licenses and registrations also include a Life and Health Insurance and Variable Annuities license with the state of Florida, Series 6 and 7 licenses with FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority), formerly the NASD, and a Series 66 license. Arthur is a registered representative of TCM Securities, Inc., a registered broker- dealer and member of FINRA/SIPC.

    He has been a member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) since 2011 and a two-time Court of the Table member with the organization. MDRT, The Premier Association of Financial Professionals®, is an international, independent association of nearly 36,000 of the world’s leading life insurance and financial services professionals from more than 430 companies in 78 countries.

    MDRT members demonstrate exceptional professional knowledge, strict ethical conduct, and outstanding client service. MDRT membership is recognized internationally as the standard of sales excellence in the life insurance and financial services business. Arthur has been a national sales award winner in the areas of sales achievement and quality achievement.

    Arthur has been a member of both the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) and the Space Coast Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (SCAIFA) since 1995. NAIFA comprises more than 600 state and local associations representing the interests of approximately 200,000 agents and their associates nationwide.

    NAIFA protects and promotes the critical role of insurance in a sound financial plan and the essential role provided by their professional agents and advisors. Arthur was a past board member and was appointed programs chair for his local SCAIFA association.

    In 1993, Arthur graduated from the Florida State University College of Business with a Bachelor of Science in marketing. While at FSU, Arthur was a member of and chaplain for the professional business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi.

    Arthur was hired at the FSU College of Business career school by FN Wolf and Co., a firm in Clearwater, Florida, as a stockbroker in 1993. In 1995, he joined his father and formed The McPherson Group by adding financial services to Dave McPherson and Associates.

    Arthur has lived in Florida and Brevard County since 1971. He graduated from Satellite High School in 1987 and from Brevard Community College with an associate degree in 1989, before going on to Florida State University. Arthur is a current FSU booster and has been a recognized and honored member of The Silver Chiefs, a distinctive organization of alumni with a shared concern for the continued advancement of the university, since 2006.

  • David McPherson

    David McPherson

    Dave started in the insurance industry in the ‘70s, after finishing his military career. His industry experience began with Liberty National in Melbourne, Florida, where he worked for five years, winning the Rookie of the Year award in his first year. He then made the president’s conference each year after that. Following his time with Liberty National, he decided to move to Prudential, where he worked for five years and continued to qualify for top honors each year.

    After working for these companies, Dave felt frustrated with the limited service he could offer as a captive agent and believed he could not provide satisfactory service to his clients unless he was part of an independent firm. He wanted to start his own business and work with companies that he felt had the best financial tools. In 1980, Dave began Dave McPherson and Associates, providing insurance and financial services.

    Dave has won many awards over the years and, for the past 41 years, has been a leader in his community and church. He has been a member of the National Association of Insurance & Financial Advisors (NAIFA) for over four decades. He was also a past president of the local Space Coast chapter of NAIFA on two different occasions.

    Dave loves being around family and friends. In his spare time, he enjoys boating, old cars, and radio-controlled model airplanes.

  • Julie McPherson

    Julie McPherson

    Director of First Impressions/Marketing Manager

    Before joining the company in 2011, Julie spent many years in the field of education. With her attention to detail and creative touch, she works with team members to help them create and implement their marketing programs. She also works closely with Art to coordinate upcoming client seminars and events.

    Julie grew up in Pennsylvania, where she enjoyed many outdoor activities with friends and family. A fervent Philadelphia Phillies fan, she has been going to Vet Stadium since she was in diapers. After graduating high school, Julie went off to Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education.

    After teaching for several years in Pennsylvania at the elementary school she attended, Julie couldn’t handle the snow anymore, so she moved south to Florida to continue her career in a warmer climate. Several years later, Julie had a student by the name of Rachel McPherson in her classroom. Rachel’s father, Art McPherson, volunteered as a chaperone for every class field trip. With Rachel’s matchmaking skills, Art and Julie married in April 2007.

    Art and Julie have two children, Rachel, who is a graduate of Florida State University, and Christian, who just graduated from high school. They also have many pets: Sarge and Ruby (rescued Goldendoodles), Renegade (Labradoodle), and several fish that don’t live long enough to get names.

  • Marvin L. Shelton Jr.

    Marvin L. Shelton Jr.

    Marvin L. Shelton Jr. is no stranger to the strength of teamwork, playing an integral role in leading and building teams for his entire life. With this in mind, he joined Art McPherson and attorney J. Scott Lanford to form a comprehensive financial services team so that his clients could meet all their financial needs.

    Marvin served in the U.S. Army with the 503rd Airborne Battle Group, 82nd Airborne Division in Okinawa, Japan. He has dedicated his life and career to helping people around the world, previously owning practices in Germany, England, and Italy. While in Europe, he specialized in serving Department of Defense employees and military personnel. He has an extreme sense of civic duty and consistently gives back to the community.

    He was president of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) Space Coast chapter in 2008, serving for two terms, until 2010. He is the founder of the Space Coast NAIFA Habitat for Humanity Annual Charity Golf Tournament and won the chapter’s service award for his second-term work. Today, he remains an active member of the organization and is the driving force behind many of the group’s charitable efforts.

    He is a loving father and the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He is married to his wife, Jacqueline, and currently resides in the Suntree area.

  • Steve McPherson

    Steve McPherson

    Steve McPherson has been a part of the McPherson Financial Group team since 1984. He is dedicated to delivering “best-in-class” solutions to clients, both corporate and individual, to help meet their complex financial challenges.

    Steve earned his Bachelor of Science in engineering from Virginia Tech. After devoting a number of years to engineering research and development, he brought his problem-solving skills to the financial services industry, helping solve both corporate and individual challenges. As a Virginia Tech graduate, he takes great pride and joy in watching the Hokies beat rivals like FSU (nephew Art McPherson’s alma mater), like in the 2010 ACC Championship!

    Over the years, Steve has earned the status of trusted advisor to a number of major corporations and individuals. He has helped design and implement corporate key executive benefit plans, as well as general employee retirement, life, and disability benefit plans. He also provides personalized services to individuals, helping them meet their insurance and retirement planning goals.

    Steve holds a FINRA Series 6 registration, as well as life, health, variable, and long-term care licenses.

  • Eric Brown

    Eric Brown

    Online Account Specialist

    Eric joined McPherson Financial Group in 2015, providing connectivity and accuracy support for all investment accounts. He helps ensure your investment data are up to date and accurate on eMoney. He also researches and implements new technology that enhances our ability to serve our clients. With his keen understanding of the client, attention to detail, and drive, he improves our efficiency. Additionally, he provides necessary information to help our clients make the best decision for their financial future.

    Eric graduated, magna cum laude, with a marketing degree from the Burnett Honors College at the University of Central Florida. Always learning, he is constantly looking for new ways to improve and sharpen his skills and learn new ones.

    In his spare time, Eric serves God and others through his church and other local organizations. He enjoys helping kids in the community and teaching children at Elevation Church Space Coast on Sundays. A huge Atlanta Falcons and UCF Knights fan, he watches all the action during football season. When he takes a breather, Eric and his lovely new wife enjoy exploring new places and improving their culinary palates at various restaurants.

  • Pamela Garceau

    Pamela Garceau

    Pam was born and raised in Florida, grew up in Brevard County, and is an Eau Gallie High School alumna. She has been married to her husband, Don, for 23 years, and they have two daughters, Christina and Crystal. Don and Pam Garceau have known Arthur McPherson since he first started with McPherson Financial Group in 1994. We now have the privilege of Pam, who has been a client for over 20 years, working with us as our business grows.

    We are excited to add Pam as a member of our service team. She brings over 30 years of experience working at Bright House Networks, where she was trained in various departments, including accounting, call center, quality control, and field services. This preparation has made Pam exceptional on the phone. You’ll notice her experience by the professional and courteous way she’s able to help you at McPherson Financial Group.

    Pam’s church is very important to her family, and she enjoys volunteering by teaching Sunday school or helping with Vacation Bible School. Pam and Don love to travel, and one of her favorite ways to travel is by cruising. Be sure to ask Pam about two honorary members of her family: her grand-pig, Sparkey, and grand-dog, Patches.

  • Careen Clarke

    Careen Clarke

    Careen has been in the financial industry sector for over seven years. Prior to joining McPherson Financial Group, Careen worked at Morgan Stanley for over four years as a client service associate and then embarked on a career as an auditor for local CPA firms. Careen worked as an auditor for HUD Developments and Nonprofit Organizations, where she gained tremendous knowledge on compliance requirements and operating businesses effectively and efficiently.

    Careen has her B.A. in communication and business administration. She is currently working on attaining her MBA.

    Careen was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and relocated with her parents to Palm Bay, Florida, when she was eight years old. She currently resides in Palm Bay with her fiancé, Craig, and six-year-old son, Jha’Kari. She enjoys traveling, reading, dancing, and spending time with family.

  • Susan Spangler

    Susan Spangler

    Susan joined McPherson Financial Group in June 2017. We are pleased to include her on our advisory team, where she brings over 19 years of industry experience to the table. Susan has had her securities licensing since 2000, and we are excited to be able to use that to help our clients have a smooth onboarding process with our firm.

    Susan has supported financial advisors at various firms, such as Merrill Lynch, Ameriprise Financial, and Raymond James. As a registered associate, she is skilled in many of the same areas as advisors and is passionate about utilizing her knowledge of investment products and financial services to make certain client accounts are well taken care of. Her ability to anticipate how the pieces of the financial puzzle come together and her attention to detail help to solidify investment relationships.

    Susan and her 15-year-old daughter just relocated to Palm Bay from Overland Park, Kansas, and they absolutely love the area. She is really getting used to the quick access to the beach. She also has two sons and will hopefully talk them into relocating in the near future!

    Susan comes from Kansas, leading us to believe that she would be unbiased in her college football affiliations. Unfortunately for us, her boyfriend has already co-opted her, and she is now a full-fledged Gator. If you call in and talk football, be prepared to hear about the Gators.
